With regard to getting a lot of hits it's all about posting relevant content (trending topics) and posting with the right keywords/tags matching your content so that it gets picked up by the WordPress search when users search for certain keywords. Word-of-mouth helps, as does posting your articles/links to articles on other platforms like Twitter and Facebook. Get your friends and their friends to subscribe to your blog posts with a feed reader like Google Reader. Also important is to post regularly to keep your readers. I've managed to, over the past (almost) year to move my monthly hits from under 1000 to up to 5000 hits in a month. Nowhere near the popular blogs but not bad, I don't think, for a personal blog. As for the Technorati/StumbleUpon bookmarks - you need to go to those sites, register and get an HTML widget that you can then add as a widget to your own blog by going to Appearance -> Widgets in your WordPress dashboard. Then just add a TEXT widget to your widget panel and paste the HTML code you got from Technorati/StumbleUpon and save it - voila!
